Scrubbing the toilet is a necessary evil. But don’t regard it as an evil at all. It’s extremely therapeutic.
I know what you’re thinking.
Who wants to scrub out the toilet? Or who wants to do the hoovering and the dusting, and the mopping of the kitchen floor, even?
Well, if you want to know a way to enjoy the household chores and make it part of your wellness routine in 2023, then you’ve come to the right place.
The secret to enjoying housework
There’s a secret to enjoying the housework.
Want to know what it is?
It’s simple. It’s a change of mindset.
I used to hate doing the housework, especially since it got in the way of my writing. So what I did was incorporate a bit of housework into my daily routine. If I do one hour of housework each day, that’s seven hours of housework each week.
Goes in a flash doesn’t it? Especially if you break it down into bite-sized chunks. The kitchen one day. The bathroom the next. The hoovering the next, etc, etc.
More than that, turn your daily hour into an hour of meditation. Buy a pair of iPods and listen to meditative music while you work. Regard it as a meditative moment in your day when your mind can switch off from its high phalutin’ thinking and just concentrate on something practical.
Why scrubbing the toilet is my favourite household chore of all
Let’s face it, scrubbing the toilet has to be done. Quite often brown debris stains onto the ceramic bowl. It’s unsightly and unhygienic and needs to be dealt with.
Quite often for me scrubbing the toilet is the last chore I do while I’m attending to the bathrooms. So, while the rest of the bathroom fixtures and fittings are already gleaming, I want the toilets to be gleaming, too.
So, I switch my mind off, grab the toilet brush and some kitchen cleaner and get scrubbing.
I’m going to let you into a perverse secret. I LOVE it. It’s by far the most enjoyable chore I do around the house.
Quickly the ceramics and the toilet seat restore to their gleaming clean selves, and then I have the joy of squirting that dark blue disinfectant and anti-scaling liquid underneath the rim of the toilet.
I squeal with delight as soon as the disinfectant slides down the ceramic bowl in huge blue globules into the water and down to the bottom of the lav.
Connect with the Universe
It’s at this point I reflect on how lucky we are to have sanitary toilet systems that work the way they do. I have been on numerous package trekking adventures around the world, and I’m telling you that there you have to dig out a trench earth toilet on top of which you squat and do your business while holding on to a pole for steadiness with one hand and a roll of your own toilet roll in the other.
The toilet roll’s pretty important on these treks. And quite often with the trekkers it has its own currency. One trekker I knew even once said wisely: “the joy of loo roll is that it has a hundred pieces. And each piece has three plies.”
Well, you can imagine the rest.
There’s something quite primeval and universal about dealing with toilets in this way. And when I’m scrubbing the loo at home, it brings me back to those heady days in the Himalayas when we had nothing but a trench to do our business in.
It makes me realise how lucky we are.
So, rather than looking at scrubbing the toilet as a chore, regard it as a fundamental experience that binds us with our forefathers and is an opportunity for meditation and positive thought.
In that way, toilet cleaning can be an important step towards wellness.
Finally, swallow your pride and get scrubbing
So, you’ve read this article and you’ve learned the secret to happiness and wellness while scrubbing the toilet.
I’m going to bet on the fact that one of your toilets could do with a clean right now.
Am I right?
So, get to it.
Treasure this opportunity to connect with the Universe.
